It’s from 2011 and the numbers are from the UK. But there is no doubt that this is a reflection of the present day as well, in other Western countries.
(UPDATE: “The EU also says that women, on average, still earn 16.4 percent less than men for the same hours worked.” – article in EUobserver.com – 04.09.2012)
The ad below was made for the International Day for Women’s Rights, March 8 last year. It features the new James Bond (yes, Daniel Craig will forever be the new Bond. Sean Connery is the Old Bond and in my family we ignore all those in between. And though my dad supports Sean, my brother and I have long since plead allegiances to Craig).
It’s an interesting choice of actors, from the campaign for equality. And I like that the producers of Bond recognised that in order to keep the franchise alive, Bond’s sexism need to go. And they have to follow through on the line introduced when Judi Dench took over the role of M in 1995 and pointedly todl James that “I think you’re a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War.” (007-GoldenEye).
The ad is not fiction. sadly.
The facts are horrific (even when delivered with Dame Dench’s velvet voice). Especially concerning violence against women, and the absurd distribution of access to power and equal pay. As M says:
So – are we equals? Until the answer is yes, we much never stop asking.
